54-56 Old Street
We return to past projects with this mixed use development. Located within touching distance of the RIBA award winning GAP house Golden Lane USE have again sourced/secured/and developed the project this time providing a mixed use development sited on the cultural border zone between Clerkenwell and Old Street. The scheme provides a design studio/showroom across 2 narrow Old Street plot locations and is acheived by retention of the concrete structure to 54 whilst demolishing a single storey video shop to no 56. This provides dynamic ecstatic triple height accommodation with a powerful presence on to Old Street - above the commercial space are 4 apartments with urban terrace oasis gardens. Dictated by conservation area requirements in terms of material language the form and finish is an ironic interpretation of traditional masonry construction - the resulting facade means the dictates of the singular nature of the 2 narrow plot widths are reconciled to provide a building that is neither singular or plural. Completion is expected for early 2012
